Universal Language Modules
This universal translation software is usually installed, along with a suite of internal cybernetics, in human children at a young age. Other species also access this software via cybernetic computers. It is also available on external commlinks and as a standalone device.
A ULM converts all audible speech it detects into its owner’s native language, either as subsonic vibrations in the ears or audibly through a speaker. It automatically recognizes alien languages and translates them in real time, and will adjust for alien units of time, distance and temperature (converting things like days, hours, seconds, lightyears, inches and degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit).
The language module does not work on written text nor on the Utir facial gesture language, which requires its own specialized VI program to interpret.
